You could ask him about, what seemed like any vehicle, on how to fix a problem with your car or van. Also, I remember uncle Don as someone who was always nice and cheerful to me.
Thanks for allowing me to share.

Eric, Ed, and Iiliff, very sorry to hear of Don's sudden passing. Like you all he was a great friend and neighbor for our family, especially our father who Don helped many times clearing snow or just spending a half hour having a chat. Don was one of those people who always made the time to say hello and have a few kind words about dad whenever I ran into him. He'll certainly be missed in the neighborhood but fondly remembered by all. Tom and Linda Snow

To the Sheppard Family, please accept my deepest sympathy and sincere condolences. I always enjoyed chatting with Don when he would come to the funeral home, and he would always come into the office for a visit, or to drop off his latest tape. He was so appreciative of anything that anyone did for him. His smile, friendliness and faith will not soon be forgotten. Take comfort in that for Don, all struggle and sorrow are past and he is now at peace in the presence of our loving Saviour. May God comfort you all in these days. Blessings, Derek Elsworth

Don was without fail a good friend and cousin to me whenever I visited Harbour Grace. His life did not seem easy, but he bore the challenges with a tremendous optimism, faith in his God, and an always cheerful smile. Don loved his country music and I will be listening to some of his tapes the next time I go for a drive. Those sad old country ballads seemed to sooth his soul. Don was devoted to his parents and to his dogs. He spoke often to me of his mother and father and always displayed a deep love for them. Nothing speaks more eloquently of this family loyalty than his daily trips to their grave and his determination to preserve their memory through its upkeep. He established a wall of memories in his home and found great comfort in being surrounded by their pictures and memorabilia. His dogs - what can I say? I was always afraid they would bite me - but they didn't. Don doted on them, often I think, lavishing more care on them than he did on himself. They were by nature guard dogs of course, and that's why they were so protective. But I don't think Don even recognized that aspect of their personalities. Don believed in loyalty and that's what the dogs seemed to represent to him. They depended on him, and he, to a large extent, depended on them. Don was fiercely loyal to those who were loyal to him, and he would often recount to me the many kindnesses that various people, both within and outside his family, offered him, particularly during the Christmas season when sad memories often seemed to weigh upon him. I can assure any of you that your generosity was well noted and appreciated by Don. Whenever I phoned him he would dutifully describe the many selfless gestures made by his friends. Don knew you were looking out for him. Don loved to tinker. He had a tremendous talent for taking something old and battered and turning it into a toy or decoration that captured some idea that he found memorable and romantic. It was an ability that I greatly envied as there are few nowadays who have the vision and the patience to pursue such a hobby. I have to smile as I remember the delightful gazebo he built in his backyard and the elaborate decorations he fashioned within it. It was special to go out there on a dark night and sit amidst the Christmas lights and chat about this and that. The Sheppard family have lost a wonderful brother and uncle and cousin in Don Sheppard. He was a fine man who always tried to do what he believed was right. I offer them my sincerest condolences on his passing. I close by reminding you of a phrase I heard both Don and his mother say repeatedly and with great sincerity: God Is Good. May God grant Don now the peace and goodness he has earned.
