Jackie, Charlene and families, we are so very sorry to hear of your dad’s passing. He was a sweet and humble man who adored his family. We truly enjoyed it when he and your mom dropped down to Gambo for a visit on their way to or from Buchans. We loved listening to his stories. You are in our thoughts and prayers at this sad time. Take care. Bob, Sadie and family

Jackie, Charlene and family,
I am so sorry to hear that your dad has passed. He was one of a kind! I will always cherish my memories of him - childhood visits to Buchans and Western Bay and the many visits he and Mary made to our place in Fortune Harbour. When Sue and I moved to Western Bay we shared many laughs together with your folks, went into the woods to cut firewood and enjoyed many a bowl of soup!
I can only imagine how difficult this is, given the current situation and know that I would be there with you today if that were possible. But I know that you have many fond memories of him that are surely a comfort to you.

(As shared elsewhere on social media)
"If you saw them coming to look for help, you'd get worried. Because they could handle pretty much anything and everything."
My Dad said that in reference to the surface crew of Asarco's Buchans unit. Especially the heavy equipment operators; and even among them, there weren't many (if any) who could compare to Johnny Fitzgerald (1934-2020). Dad made that clear to me too. And Johnny would go on to work with Dad for years and years with Buchans Enterprises. A cornerstone and a legend in a great crew of Buchans men.
So between that and my own experiences starting as early as when I sometimes tagged along when Dad would make his rounds at the mines through to recent years, Johnny Fitzgerald is a giant and an icon in my universe.
Ask me to give you a name of somebody I know from home to represent work ethic, loyalty, stamina, and/or resilience - and even with so much stiff competition - I would nominate John Fitzgerald in a heartbeat.
Dad would fill in the gaps for me on my earliest memories. Stuff like Johnny roaring out of Oriental west pit in the 988 Loader and a 3 or 4 year old me turning on a dime and running like hell away! (Johnny would always offer me a ride in the Loader when I was a kid, but unlike riding in the digger or the D8, I would decline - I was terrified of the 988 for some reason!).
Whether it was mobilizing the gear and firing up the logistics to build and service a woods camp or hauling down headframes or operating the gear as no-one else could in places no-one else could reach. (as Dad might say, he could scratch your back with the boom). Johnny was first up - and putting the younger guys in the crew to shame.
The US Army boasts it gets more done before 9am than most people do all day.
Well, Johnny was the guy who wakes up the US Army to let them know they need not bother with this week's work, he was done that by 6:30!
Almost a person out of time, Johnny reminded me of a phrase from the age of sail - "wooden ships, iron men." Tough doesn't cover it.
Kind and friendly too. I know he's up there with Mary now - someone else I very much miss - especially her sense of humour, her stories and the fun we'd have when we'd call on the Fitzgeralds when jannying or out at Red Indian Lake.
To the entire Fitzgerald family - we extend our heartfelt thoughts, prayers, condolences and care. And to Johnny - for all that you did, those great memories and the standard you set - I am in awe and eternally grateful.
