Pauline and family: Sorry to hear about the passing of your dad. We were away at the time of his death. I'm not sure if you will still get this message but thought I would send it just in case. We seem to have lost touch over the years but I still remember the times spent in Crockers Cove with your family. Having lost my own dad a year and a bit ago, I know this is a sad time for you. My best to your mom.

Dear Pauline and Clarke family. Leo and I were shocked and saddened to hear of your Dad's death. Your Father was a quiet, kind man, much like my own Dad, who kept in touch with your parents and often spoke of them. I know how difficult a time this is for you all but as you reflect through your memories and old photographs and the stories that others will tell you, may you find comfort.

I have countless childhood summer memories of visiting Uncle Eric and Aunt Barb at their home in Carbonear. Uncle Eric was a quiet, kind and gentle person but also had a great sense of humor. As I grew older, I remember him as a great conversationalist. At one point he was an indispensable source for a university sociology paper that I was writing. We spent hours talking about growing up in Newfoundland in his generation. Uncle Eric obviously loved children and was delighted when i brought my daughter, Jacqueline, (now 16) to visit Carbonear for the first time. I know that, along with my dad, he is now in a better place but his warmth and memory will always remain with us. Diane Howell Ewens, Seattle, USA

Mrs. Clarke and Family. Just wanted to convey my sincere condolences to your family on the passing of Mr. Clarke. While I did not really know him (being one of the younger Butt Clan) I do remember him being spoken of in very fond tones. The last time that I saw Mr. Clarke he was attending the wake of my Dad, James P. Butt. I remember he came during the supper hour as there would not be so many folks there. He looked so sincerely sad. And I knew that my Dad was a very good friend of his! I know they are reunited again in Heaven and my Dad is welcoming your Dad into a new family! Enjoy your memories! They will help you get through this sadness. It does get easier.... God bless!

From September 23-25, 2010, I had to travel to Ottawa to attend a conference. My Mom's birthday (Grace Howell) is October 1st and Uncle Eric's is October 2nd. Since my Dad's passing in 2000, Mom always spends her birthday with us. This year, I thought it would be extra special for her to travel from Newfoundland to Ottawa so that she could visit with her older brother. They had a wonderful day. Jeanette and Auntie Barb were also there. It had been some time since Mom and Uncle Eric had seen each other, and with Parkinsonian dementia, we were questioning if Uncle Eric would recognize her. But when he told her that she "talked too much" we all knew that he knew this was his sister!! With wonderful memories, Dr. Karen Woolfrey, Hamilton, Ontario
